We found Esther Walker’s work through one of our spotlight photographers, Allison V. Smith. She admires these vintage quality instant shots, and now we do too. We’re sure you will enjoy learning about her perspective on our environment here in North Texas.

When and how did you become interested in photography?

I bought an old polaroid land camera at estate sale and took it out around town. A friend who is a great photographer told me about flickr and once I started I was hooked. I used comments and faves from her and other good photographers to learn which photos were good/bad, etc., I used flickr as a teacher.

What gear do you mainly use?

I use a polaroid 660 or 600 but since the demise of 600 film I have been using the Fuji Instax.

What is your favorite genre to shoot?

Most of the photographs are conceptual I guess. I think of them as studies, a way to understand what’s around me.

Many times photographers find themselves with a full schedule of paying gigs, and end up with little time for doing the work they truly love. Do you struggle with finding time for your personal work?

I don’t work professionally as a photographer, but it is hard to find time to get good shots. and with the instant camera, I like to shoot during the golden hours, which is also limiting.

Where do you find your inspiration?

I learn a lot from looking at the portfolios of other photographers/artists, whether it be on flickr or in publications. when I see all of the photographs together it helps me understand what the person is really after, it helps me understand what common thread runs through each photo.

What is one thing you feel makes your style or your work unique?

I’m not sure exactly, maybe it’s that the photographs seem more like a personal dialogue between me and the city, or North Texas in general, and what happens here.
